PETALING JAYA: Some 150,000 Umno Youth members have yet to register as voters.
In preparing for the next general election, the movement would get all of them to register, said Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.
The registration campaign had gone full throttle and would be carried out in two phases, he said.
"The first step is to register non-voting members before the end of the year. Our biggest task is to trace the whereabouts of existing members who have changed addresses," Khairy said at a gotong-royong in Kelana Jaya near here yesterday.
He said more than 60 per cent of the population in urban areas were aged below 40 years.
"Many of them have migrated to the cities and we have lost contact with them. I hope they will come forward and update their particulars at the nearest Umno branch offices."
The second phase entails the registration of non-member voters.
The opposition parties had registered more than 100,000 voters since the last general election, he said.
"It is important for Barisan Nasional (BN) to follow suit, as politics is a numbers' game," Khairy said, adding that the Youth wing had registered 53,000 voters in previous months.
"I am not criticising other BN component parties, but we need more active participation from all parties to secure more voters."
During the gotong-royong at Blok Bestari flats, 450 people registered as members.
