| In Defence of Those Who Despise Me |
 |
No other website has caused me as much bad rep and deliberately destroyed my character as Raja Petra Kamaruddin's Malaysia Today. Yet I cannot help disagreeing with the recent move by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to block access to the site. Such blatant and crude employment of State power is inconsistent with the widening of the democratic space – an approach the current Administration adopted long before the 12th General Election. Citizens' right to information aside, MCMC's high-handed approach also sends out the wrong message as it is at odds with the Multimedia Super Corridor Bill of Guarantees – a ten-point Bill that prescribes zero Internet censorship. The government will do well to appear consistent in its application of Internet regulation and steadfast in its commitment to ensure, wherever possible, free access to information as controversial or inaccurate as they may often be in Malaysia Today's case. I am sure many are aware that Raja Petra is for the time being hosting the site elsewhere. It is quite bemusing that MCMC should have thought the blocking of access to Malaysia Today would actually succeed. Internet censorship may not only be unnecessary, it is quite often impossible, especially when the targeted site is, for better or worse, one of the most popular across the country. Few would disagree with the view that Malaysia Today deliberately invites controversy upon itself and does its best to elicit reaction from the government and certain individuals that become targets of Raja Petra. In his incessant desire to concoct sensationalism, he often peddles half-truths and occasionally, outright lies. The inability to judiciously moderate comments also results in racially and religiously offensive remarks being posted without any restriction by the web master. Nevertheless, none of these should justify an attempt at outright censorship. There are ample alternative channels to pursue action if desired - public rebuttals or civil suits for defamation are a few. And from personal experience, I find it apt sometimes to simply ignore the site and its wild stories even at great cost to my own reputation. Apart from violating the principle of openness and transparency that this Administration champions and that I have publicly defended, this move also threatens to further alienate young, urban voters from Barisan Nasional. This act of censorship betrays a lack of faith in Malaysia's youth to intelligently decide the truth for themselves. Tabloids sell far more than broadsheets in many countries, but it would take a bold person to suggest that readers of The Sun or The Mirror in the UK, for example, take all of its content at face value. I see every indication that bright young Malaysians, too, can apply the same self-filtering process. What they will not stand for is the State imposing its own filter on the Web. The Barisan Nasional government needs to be savvier in responding to issues on the Internet. Incidentally, YABhg Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed has also blogged on this issue and similarly proposed that the government avoid Internet censorship. And so I find myself on the side of both Raja Petra and Tun Dr Mahathir. It could either mean that I find myself as Alice in an impossible Wonderland or just simply the magic of the Ramadhan spirit is at work.

I have to 101% agree with KJ that malaysia today should not be blocked at all, even though it wallop the government upside down by exposing (KJ's?) misdeeds and outrageous corrupt practices.
Now the question is: RPK, Teressa Kok & the Sinchew reporter is being detained under ISA, what is KJ's stand on their detention??? Is KJ going to say "Hey, Syed Hamid, screw you, what you did is damn f***ing wrong...!" ?? |

Ini tulis BI pun hancur. "Popularist"? Hey bodoh, that's not even a word man. Kalau kau tengok spell check pun dah boleh tahu.
"so why don't you just quit it while you're still at it? " Man, your English sucks so bad. Whatever RPK is, his English doesn't suck like this stupid impostor.
I think must be some SPM failure yang tulis ni... RPK konon... please lah pergi beli dictionary dulu or watch Sesame Street. Stupid idiot. |

Raja Petra,
If the late Adlan Benan saw you wrote that comment he would have kicked you back to school. Is there such a word as popularist? Or are u just a fake RPK wannabe? Even that anarchist could spell and is smart enough to outsource his work if he knew the article was beyond his comprehension.
Blogs maybe the final frontier for circulative info, but clearly not for illiterate morons. Try Rocky's Bru, its a notch down from MT. It welcomes non-value adding comments like yours.
Thank you and have a nice week ahead RPK.

Sempena bulan baik ni, let me have Husnul Dzon or to sangka baik on what you wrote. I like to assume that you got your facts wrong, hence no malice. I will now explain to you that:
One: KJ did not peg his challenge on Permatang Pauh’s by-election result. He got it pegged against the exodus of Barisan MPs to Pakatan, leading to a change of Federal Government administration, on 16 September 2008, as claimed by Anwar. Hence the Permatang Pauh’s by-election is never a consideration here.
Two: The subject position is KJ’s Deputy Youth UMNO post, period.
Three: Let us not forget that Anwar is challenged to resign from his position in PKR should the claimed change of Federal Government administration failed to happen on 16 September 2008.
Four: Many Anwar’s supporters are spinning the challenge, in the same language you used, to kill off the real and exact challenge, for, the fear, I believe, that the 16 September claim may not materialise at all. Hence, the Save-Anwar’s Face’s campaign must start now.

People believe what they want to believe. And the general tendency is that people like to believe things to the contrary. If something is good, someone will try very hard to find bad points about a good thing. It is human nature.
As for RPK, all I can say is that he has his followers who want to believe him, for no other reason but for the sake of wanting something different. Again, it is human nature.
Shutting down his site wil have detrimental effect as there are other methods of bypassing the blocks. At least the MCMC is on the right track in getting Malaysians to be Internet-savvy.
In the end, it is how you judge the situation. RPK has evolved to be a person who can do no wrong in the eyes of his loyalists, just as Anwar. Shut down one another will spring up. Right or wrong decision, the MCMC will have to bear the responsibility. MCMC has determined, without consultation to the Government, the future that lies for Malaysians who crave for fictions. In the end, it is all about being true to oneself. |

Going to Oxford clearly has nothing to do with being foul mouthed. I think that if at all, KJ has fairly commented in the press well and so has he debated in parliament. With well researched material and articulate language. What he says to his party members in UMNO rallies is clearly up to him and his supporters.
Have you heard DSAI speak lately? RPK must be his Chief political aide then. Its all fiction and lies. To the point that its made a mockery of Stat Declarations. It just sounds nicer when the groundswell is with you.

Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin said the very first thing Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim would do if he was able to form the government on Sept 16 would be to finalise deals with his foreign financiers on what benefits they would enjoy. He said Anwar would also immediately sign a Free Trade Agreement with the United States. "He would also agree with US intentions to set up a naval base in Sabah. I obtained all this information from very reliable sources," said Khairy at a ceramah at the Barisan Nasional Youth operation centre near here. "We would like to know how Anwar is obtaining huge funds for his by-election campaign. Just look at the posters. I'm sure it would have cost him millions. We do not want him to sell off the country. "If PKR is in power for the next five years, I'm sure they can sell the country. Anwar is a hypocrite of the highest order." Khairy also lambasted Parti Keadilan Rakyat for the way its members and supporters behaved on nomination day for the by-election. "PKR claimed that Umno practises the samseng culture. However, they are the ones who resort to such methods as could be clearly seen on nomination day and in Anwar's campaigns." Khairy said although he did not want to resort to personal attacks, he had to bring up certain issues regarding Anwar as it involved his credibility as a leader. "We are talking about the future of the country and we want a leader who is credible and responsible to the people." He said Anwar claimed corruption was practised by the BN leaders but it was during his time as finance minister that many of hiscronies had benefited. Khairy said the BN government was committed to fighting corruption and this was obvious when, three years ago, Perak executive council member Datuk Azman Mahalan was charged with corruption although he was a good friend of the prime minister. He also claimed he had been informed that Pas no longer trusted Anwar and did not want him as the prime minister. "Pas is not here to campaign for Anwar. They have rejected him. It is just that they are reluctant to inform him of their decision." Khairy said he was willing to resign as Umno Youth deputy head on Sept 16 if Anwar fulfils his promise of being able to form the new government. "However, if he fails to do so, he must then be willing to resign as PKR de facto leader," he added. From Susan loone: Khairy Jamaluddin is going to resign as UMNO deputy Youth chief. |

It is very interesting that Mr Khairy took position on this issue. Though I support press freedom and the freedom of expression as sacrosanct, I believe it is also for RPK to 'self-censor' some of the reader's comments which can inflame an already tense and sensitive situation in this country.
I do that on my website and I am sure Tun Mahathir is doing the same. That is eliminate comments that are too sensitive and attacks other people's beliefs.

What PKR have been saying all along are very very believable and the onus was on the Government to face the challenging issues raised. MalaysiaToday was never a part of the mainstream where everyone for some period in time believed it to be gospel truth more so when there was nothing else to read. The gomen failed and theres little or no room for denial here - forget our likes and dislikes and face truth, be realistic. The people have been told for 50 odd years that UMNO is its protector and to a large extent this is true.
Attitudes change from all sides and the only group finding difficulty to adjust is UMNO. People have denied themselves for many logical rational and gave UMNO the benefit of the doubt- Now the phenomenal has taken the lead and UMNO is blaming the people scolding and rebuking unrepentant. UMNO has lost its plot where the appetite of both power and wealth have taken a very personal dimension which unfortunately blur the need of the Malay thus encouraging absurd calls from and for Malaysians.
In my humble opinion the Malays are as deprived as they are frustrated and give the current surge if one were to relent, the Malay as well as other indigenous communities will be left under the flyover.
As it is UMNO isn't prepared to make sacrifices - not when I see 12-15 cars in their parking lot let alone the tentacles in almost every business that piles on hundreds of millions into its elite.
I firmly believe Anwar will have to put his foot down if he was to assume power otherwise he could not last a term rest assured.
Which is base on the presumptuous and ridiculous calls for non-Malay groups that confuse their genuine needs.
I have always contend that a son in-law cannot expect to be equals in home of his spouse parents and siblings.
This isn't about Raja Petra it is about UMNO and its responsibility to balance-hence I opined UMNO have lost the plot.
Good luck KJ, but Ranting cursing and swearing at Anwar Petra or PAS enrages the people which invariably mends that fictitious bound which is threatening UMNO. |

Bloggers whom post libellous comments or defamatory remarks such was the case in Godfrey V Demon Internet in the UK, when the ISP Demon Internet was given several notices on damaging libelous remarks in a discussin group that was hosted by the defendant, but nothing was done.
Court ruled in favour of the plaintiff. People whether blogging, or writing articles must be responsible, in this case the Internet Service Provider was held responsible.

KJ: Impartiality should be the instrinsic value which all politicians should adhere to as a pivotal light in moulding and shaping national policies for the country.
Your displeasure registered and commented on MCMC is just the beginning of your inner-self to indulge into impartiality but the damage which you have hurled using your pride and ego certainly deserve the bashing from RPK.
Keep up with your impartiality approach, you will gradually gain acceptance and agreement from your opponents. However, the adoption of impartiality without conscience is synomous to action with ulterior motive. Let the public be critics if you aspire for higher political recognition. |

Aku menangis pada Hari Merdeka. (I am Crying on Merdeka (Independence) Day.)
1. Aku menangis kerana rakyat Malaysia telah hilang kegembiraan dan perasaan terhadap masa hadapan negara yang diimpiankan dan tidak seperti semasa Allahyarham Tunku Abdul Rahman melaungkan “Merdeka!”.
(I cry because Malaysians have lost the joy and hope of a future Malaysia as wished for unlike the times when the late Tunku Abdul Rahman shouted "Merdeka". )
(I cry thinking of some Malaysians who talk, think and act to divide the citizens with their own racists and religious thoughts without a care for nationalism and friendships.)
3. Aku menangis memikirkan ada rakyat Malaysia yang lebih mementingkan sendiri dari negara apabila timbul isu-isu parti, jawatan, habuan, kuasa, kawan, kesahabatan dan keadilan.
(I cry thinking of some Malaysians who care more of themselves rather than the Nation when it comes to issues of party, posts, rewards, power, friends, relationship and fairness.)
4. Aku menangis memikirkan ada rakyat dan keluarga mereka yang masih belum mendapat keadilan sewaktu dipenjarakan, ditindas, dirompak, diugut, didiskriminasikan dan tidak juga dibenarkan bersuara.
(I cry thinking of some citizens and their families who have not obtain justice while being imprisoned, oppressed, robbed, threatened, discriminated and not even allowed the freedom of speech.)
5. Aku menangis memirkirkan ada rakyat Malaysia yang masih hidup Kias Pagi, Makan Pagi; Kias Petang Makan Petang walaupun Malaysia sudah 50 tahun merdeka.
(I cry thinking there are still Malaysians who still live from Hand to Mouth everyday, even though Malaysia has already achieved 50 years of Independence.) Posted at http://patek1472.wordpress.com

First time visiting you blog. Your command of the English language is very good but a bit too flowery; goes for most of the rest of your commentators. Are they sucking up to you? Their comments reeks of too much superficiality. My dad always said all politicians are liars. So what politicians say should be taken with a pinch of salt. And that goes for those in the Government.
@Bill Gates: If RPK has no life, why would the government pay so much attention to one man? Coming from someone who uses Bill Gates as their nick, oh please.
Maybe if our BN politicians showed more class, and doesn't go around saying things like "Batu Gajah also leaks every month." and utter disgusting racist remarks themselves and actually focused on practicing good governance, there wouldn't be so many critics and much material for them to shoot you back with. Didn't the building's roof leak again recently?
OMGWTFBBQSAUCE. Lulz. |

YB,
Dont also discount guns for hire like Rocky's Bru whom just got a ticking off from TPM's office whom extended the stupid SD from Malaysia Today in his blog. Its a clear case of 'baling batu sembunyikan tangan' as Rocky will just say 'Im just merely posting it as a feature from MT'.
Bloggers must now take the higher ground and stop acting like agent provocateurs, by inciting hatred without any form of proof. We Malaysians cannot let bloggers be the judge, jury and executioner of M'sian personalities albeit from the echelons of society or joe public. There are many reputable ones that are anti establishment that is tasteful such as Susan Loone for example.
Like food, M'sians must pick and choose where to frequent. |

Malaysia Today is a not a responsible website on 3 counts. First, the fiction written by the likes of Sayuti Omar, RPK himself and the late Adlan Benan (DSAI's ex-goon) does not qualify any form of truth which renders it defamatory. Secondly the comments made by its bloggers are not responsibly filtered and also racial comments that its inciteful is not moderated (Usually an act of cowardice behind a computer screen) and it could cause major racial tension and possible breakout of fights on the streets and alienation. Thirdly, MT is a clear irresponsible platform of DSAI and DAP to poison the minds of the citizens of Malaysia and renders overall thinking to be myopic and downright irrational.
MCMC HAS to regulate some form of censorship so we multiracial M'sians can live in harmony. MT is not a logical or politically mature platform for any form of discourse as its is ran by Anarchist. |

So Khairy, when are you going to resign as the UMNO Youth Deputy and answer Anwar's challenge to you to resign as Rembau MP if he wins the election? |

RPK mortified and traded you like a moron raised from a cesspit that reeks like compost and yet you defended his site beyond what conventional doctrine of proportionate response customarily suggests. For that you deserved the highest grade of civil salutation from RPK’s strong aficionados and all Malaysians, too.
This elegant, yet humble, deed exhibits the larger size of your heart than all of your foes, combined and should propagate the seed of civil maturity and the ability to decouple the need to respond from its type.
Actions, if justified, should be taken against any irresponsible writers, of old or new media. But, and it is a big but, such actions need not necessarily translate to communist-state-alike thwack, as in the proscription of Malaysia Today webpage.

Assalammualaikum.
Understood that Dato Shaziman is your cousin. Mabybe you should rationalize with him on this ban. MCMC is actually under the purview of KTAK (Dato Shaziman's portfolio). Hence, giving a bad reflection onto his ministry.
Salam. |
